Favorite Prom Movies

18 Apr

In honor of Prom 2012 we’re taking a look at some of our favorite movies that feature proms. Old, new, good, bad, we’re reliving all the magical moments of movie proms.

1. Pretty in Pink– This is a classic 80’s brat pack movie and if you haven’t seen it we suggest you do! Andie is the girl from the wrong side of the tracks, Blane is the dreamy rich boy, throw in a dorky best friend named Duckie and you have the recipe for a great prom movie.

2. She’s All That– From a classic 80’s movie to a classic 90’s movie. Can Freddie Prinze, Jr. take “the girl with the ponytail” and make her into prom queen? If the romance isn’t enough for you this movie has one of the best prom dance scenes!

Q & A with Miss New York Teen USA 2012, Sabrina Mastrangelo!

3 Apr

We recently had a chance to speak with the 2012 Miss New York Teen USA, Sabrina MastrangeloSabrina is currently a sophomore in Bellmore, NY and hopes in the future to study broadcasting. Her dream career is to become a news anchor, but for now she enjoys participating in her school plays and plans on studying journalism.

Name: Sabrina Mastrangelo
Age: 15
Hometown: Bellmore, NY
Grade Level: Sophomore in high school.

  • Have you already attended the Prom?

No I have not.

  • What are you looking forward to the most?

Definitely looking for a dress!! I think that is the most exciting part! I already have the style in mind: a strapless mermaid dress. Since I am on the shorter side, a mermaid dress looks best on me and will flatter my figure.

  • Do you plan on attending after prom?

Yes I do.  Last year at my high school, the seniors all went to a bounce house after prom. First they changed into their after prom dresses and jumped all night long in inflatable houses! I thought that was a fun idea and hope to do that when I am a senior!

  • What made you try out for this Pageant?

I was never involved in pageants as a child. I always knew I wanted to compete in one, but it never occurred to me I could compete in a teen pageant since they are not usually televised. Once I became aware of the huge pageant world, I entered my first pageant and competed for the Miss New York Teen USA 2011 crown. I placed in the top 20 in my first pageant ever! I then continued and won the Miss Long Island Teen Pageant in August of 2011. After Miss Long Island, I was set to compete for Miss New York Teen 2012 and I won!

  • Do you have a favorite memory from the Pageant?

Definitely winning! I had only competed in two pageants before Miss New York Teen USA so this win is a huge accomplishment to me. Besides winning, meeting all the girls was something I will never forget. We become so close during pageant weekend and consider each other to be “pageant sisters.” If I had to pick one part of the pageant I did not like, it would be missing out on the opportunity to say goodbye to all of my new “sisters.” After I was crowned, I was bombarded with interviewers and photographers wanting pictures, so I was unable to really get to talk to the girls after the show. We all still keep in touch on Facebook though!

  • What advice would you give girls your age on “following their dreams”?

You never know what you can accomplish until you try it. I never in my wildest dreams thought that I could ever be a state queen. I went into my first pageant having no experience and it turned out great! Taking that one risk led me to receive two titles in the past six months! My advice to all girls would be to never give up and give everything a shot! You never know what can happen or what you may fall in love with!

  • What are some of your go-to beauty products that would be a good recommendation for Prom Night?

Well, I actually have an entire Youtube channel dedicated to beauty! You should check it out!

Some of my favorite products are Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer, Benefit’s “They’re Real” Mascara, and Bobbi Brown or Ulta gel eyeliner! All of these are perfect for any pageant or prom night!  Anything Mehron is perfect for stage performances and for that extra dramatic effect.

Fun Facts about Sabrina:

1.      One of Sabrina’s favorite stores is Bebe and BCBG but, for the best shopping experience malls and department stores are the best because they have a little bit of everything!

2.      Along with winning Miss Long Island Teen, she got to train with her pageant director in preparation for the state pageant. One great tip she learned was to pretend there’s a string pulling up your head and you’ll stand taller!

3.      She wants to be an anchor woman/ TV host in the future!

Name:  Lenay Dunn

Hometown:  I was born in the Congo, Africa.  But I grew up most of my life in Fridley, Minnesota.
Website:  www.LenayDunn.com
Twitter: www.twitter.com/LenayDunn

·         Did you attend the Prom?  I did!  I think I went to a total of 5 proms in high school, 2 at my own school (Fridley High School), and 3 at my friends’ schools.  I liked prom so much I’d call my friends from other schools and ask them to find me dates at their schools so I could go to prom again lol.  My favorite dress I ever wore to a prom was pink and sparkly.  I attached some pics.  I think the dress is actually still at my parents house in a closet somewhere.  That was my first prom ever in 11th grade, with my first boyfriend Jake.

·         What did you learn in High School that prepared you for your career today?   I went to public school in Fridley, MN.  & it was awesome!!  (I went to a few private schools’ proms though.. the boys were cute.)  I took a lot of theatre classes and art classes at my high school though.  I was in a lot of the school plays in middle school and then in high-school I read the morning announcements broadcasted over the classroom TV’s in the morning.  So I think I learned how to run around on camera a bit.  I also played ice hockey & was on the swim/track team.  Which has nothing to do with this interview, or with my job today, but it was still fun! xo

·         What are you working on these days?  Besides hosting the countdown show ’10 on Top’ on MTV (Saturdays 11:30am EST), I was just picked up by Macy’s to be their brand American Rag’s official ‘it girl’, which is very exciting & fun!  I get to blog about fashion & music, be the face of their brand, and go to all the summer music festivals to interview bands.

·         What is your favorite part about being a host on MTV? lots of things… getting to live half in New York  (I live in Nashville and fly to NYC 3 days a week to host the show), the team of people who work on the show are super awesome, and I get an office in Times Square (which is more like a giant closet since I keep lots of clothes and shoes in it ha)

·         What would your advice be for the Class of 2012?   Have fun!  You are about to graduate and you have SO much adventure ahead of you, just have fun with it – you only live once.  That and tweet me.  That’s the best advice of 2012.  Be my twitter friend.  @lenaydunn.

·         Tell us about some of your favorite hobbies, pastimes.  I like jogging, watching cat videos on the internet, making funny videos with my friends & putting them on youtube.. I also like speaking Spanish (I originally went to college to be a Spanish teacher), playing road hockey with neighborhood kids, & baking sugar cookies.

Prom Accessories: Rhinestone Headbands

27 Feb

Headbands= 5 year old girl with pigtails, right? Wrong! Ever since Gossip Girl exploded onto the scene the popularity of headbands has risen and we have none other then the Queen B herself, Blair Waldorf, to thank. Blair’s obsession with headbands has caused headbands to make their way into our hearts and our heads not only in our everyday accessories but also our formal accessories. If you are as obsessed with headbands as we are Prom 2012 would be the perfect occasion to show off that obsession!

Rhinestone headbands are definitely the perfect accessory to add to your Prom 2012 look. These headbands can be found at almost any accessory store, two of our favorites come from Prom Girl Jewelry. These headbands will make any 2012 Prom look pop and will add a little bling without being too much.

Q & A with Chinyere Adogu, Contestant for Miss New York Teen 2012!

27 Jan
  • Name: Chinyere “Chi” Adogu
  • Age: 18yrs
  • Hometown: Brooklyn, NY
  • Grade Level: Freshman in College
  • Have you already attended the Prom?

                     Yes I have

  • What is your favorite memory?

My favorite memory of prom was me and my best friends celebrating four years of high  school on the dance floor.

Chi's custom made Prom Dress & After Prom Blazer

  • Did you attend an After-Prom?

I didn’t attend an official After-Prom party. I did attend a party after my prom was over and the party was really not that great at all. I should have attended an After-Prom!

  • What made you try out for this Pageant?

I have seen the issues teenagers face and wanted to use the pageant as a gateway to help spread awareness of these issues. Pageantry is a great way to get involved and help better the community.

  • Do you have a favorite memory from the Pageant?

My favorite memory from the pageant was building friendships with the other contestants and pageant staff. I also loved doing the opening number dance for the show.

  • What advice would you give girls your age on “following their dreams”?

I would tell them to go for it, be ambitious and do not let set backs get you down. You only live once, and its best to get hard work out of the way now, while you’re young, so you can really enjoy life later on.

  • What are some of your go-to beauty products that would be a good recommendation for Prom Night?

I would recommend you have lotion, eye liner and lip gloss/ lip stick to do touch ups throughout the night. I think Make-Up Forever from Sephora has really great eye liners that last long and E.L.F Cosmetic has great lip gloss and lip sticks.

  • FUN FACTS About Chinyere:

1.I actually got a chance to do a prom photo shoot with Teen Vogue and the best part was that they let me keep the dress!

2.My prom dress and after party outfit was custom made, mixed with Nigerian fabric to show off my own sense of style mixed with my culture.
3.I actually got sick at prom and had to lay down outside with a teacher for about 30 minutes. That was the worst part about my prom.
